Weaving ExperimentsMost of the weaving I've done has been experimental. For several years I tried to pick up every technique I could, moving on to the next technique before really perfecting any one method. Unfortunately I also had the habit of giving away my good pieces w/o getting photos first. I've only recently settled down to doing useable pieces and have learned my lesson about not recording my work. Below are some of the experimental pieces I did and still have.
This was supposed to be check pattern. What I got instead was almost a spiral effect. I made another like it in red and black.
The two above are early experiments in brocading. This is where I learned the importance of using different size thread for the brocading. I never really went back to do more work with this.
The above was an early experiment in double weave lettering. It was also one of the first times I used crochet thread for weaving. I found crochet thread very unforgiving and went back to pearl and unmercerized cottons.
The above 2 are experiments in double cloth. The top one is short because of a frequent problem I run into. If I travel with a piece too much the warp eventually gets so tangled I have to cut the piece and start over. It's best to just leave the weaving at home unless you can finish it in one or two sittings if you travel with it.
This was a sample to learn how moving the cards different ways changed the design. This was before I was able to get Peter Collingwood's book and read the results of his studies. His "Techniques of Tablet Weaving" is a must for any serious weaver. | ||||||||||
