Weaving 2000Here are the pieces I've done in 2000.
The piece above is an attempt to do the Birka Weave that Mistress Thora Sharptooth designed. The pattern can be found here. This is a good example of why you should never travel with a complicated piece. This was done on a backstrap loom. There are noticable changes in tension from when I'd start it up someplace new. Both times that I messed up the pattern were when I tried weaving it with about a dozen people in the room. I got caught up in the conversation and would lose my place in the pattern.
This is a piece of trim I'm working on for a Viking tunic. This piece was done on a backstrap loom. After doing two 3 yard sections on a backstrap I'm finishing the last 4 yards on an inkle style loom.
This is a more recent attempt at double weave. The cards are threaded alternately S and Z and the designs are based on paired cards. The first half was kept tight together the second half I wove loose. Some experimentation in the warping created some problems in the warp and finally forced me to cut this piece shorter than I had attended. Despite the problems this was a very educational piece.
Double weave done in polyester sewing thread. The text is Latin for 'I thank you for service'. The translation is courtesy of Count Sir Jehan de la Marche. This is a prototype for a token of thanks for those in our shire who provide outstanding service. | ||||||||||
