Weaving 2006Below is the weaving for a favor I made for my Lady, Juliana. I messed up an earlier attempt but this time I was able to finish it. There's a fault in the middle of this pieces also, but it was small enough I could live with. Weaving multiple patterns simultaneously requires a lot of concentration, even when the individual patterns aren't that complicated. The warp and weft are done in 60/2 silk. This piece is 62 cards wide for a woven width of approximately 1 1/8". It was woven at a rate of approximately 1 inch every 90 minutes. The borders are an original pattern I came up with several years ago. The pattern is available here and an earlier sample of the border alone can be seen here. The lettering pattern (and the middle knotwork pattern) is from Master Guntram von Wolkenstein and can be found here. There are a few letters I'm not happy with and I'll probably modify them some if I use this font again.
Below is a piece of brocaded trim I wove for a Viking apron dress (shown sewn on already.) The pattern is based on a common Viking era pattern known as Birka 22. The warp and primary weft are done in 60/2 silk, the brocade wefts(2) are done using an embroidery thread consisting of a silver colored foil wrapped around a thread core (similar to the Kreinik Japan #7 I've used in previous pieces, only a cheaper brand.) I wasn't sure the offbrand would work as well as the Kreinik but it worked just as well and looks just as good. Silver foil wrapped around a silk or linen core (called 'spun-silver') was one of several types of brocading threads found in the Birka finds. This piece is 21 cards wide for a woven width of approximately 3/8". The brocaded portion was 7 1/2" long. It took about 15 hours to complete the entire piece. My speed at brocading has decreased from previous pieces due to the increased weft density and quality. Documentation for this piece (done by my Lady, Juliana) is here.
